In Russia, they decided to block the social network Instagram after they called for violence against Russians.
Meta’s social networks blocked in Russia
Roskomnadzor has just announced that, based on the requirement of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, access to the Instagram social network in Russia will be limited.
This became possible because Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, allowed users to post calls for violence, which is a gross violation of the law and is unacceptable in our country. Roskomnadzor immediately responded to this, which demanded that the corporation confirm or deny messages about changes in Facebook and Instagram policies and content moderation rules as soon as possible.
The press secretary of the President of Russia had to intervene in the situation. “We need to check whether Facebook and Instagram really allowed calls for violence against Russians, and if so, we must decisively stop their activities,” said Dmitry Peskov.
Ekaterina Mizulina reacted next, who made an appeal and urged the Russians to immediately delete accounts in the above social networks. The head of the Safe Internet League, Ekaterina Mizulina, admitted the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Investigative Committee to check the actions of the platform.
Now you need to switch to Telegram
“We believe that such calls for the use of violence against Russians are a direct threat to Russian users around the world. Instagram continues to work and push ethnic groups together, incite hatred. Meta turns into a supporter of nationalism and Nazism. The legal assessment of the actions of Meta should be given by the Prosecutor General’s Office, the TFR. For my part, today I plan to delete accounts from Facebook and Instagram and call on all Russians, the entire Russian world to support this action and leave the sites, ”Mizulina said in an interview.
Later it became known that the Prosecutor General’s Office took into account public opinion and the words of Peskov and Mizulina, and after checking, demanded that Roskomnadzor restrict access to Instagram, as well as recognize Meta (the parent company of Instagram and Facebook) as an extremist organization and ban its work in the country.
The Investigative Committee also did not remain aloof from the issue and opened a criminal case against employees of Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp).
“Company spokesman Andy Stone took to social media to announce that Meta has temporarily lifted its ban on incitement to violence against the Russian military on its platforms, calling it a form of political expression. These actions contain signs of crimes under Articles 280, 205.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – (public calls for extremist activities; assistance to terrorist activities).
As part of the criminal case, the necessary investigative measures are being taken to provide a legal assessment of the actions of Andy Stone and other employees of the American corporation,” the UK said.
“Such actions by the company’s management not only form an idea of the permissibility of terrorist activity, but are also aimed at inciting hatred and enmity towards the citizens of the Russian Federation … Materials have been sent to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation to resolve the issue of criminal prosecution,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said.
We add that over the past 10 years, Instagram has seriously developed in Russia. Celebrities had several million subscribers, earning on the sale of advertising. In addition, the social network has grown many new youth stars who have become famous either through videos or pictures.
